March 7 - Lakeview Trail (just a portion of it) - Antelope Island
Sunny morning with temps already in the low 40s and an expected highs in the mid-50s. And there's some high clouds.
Crossing the causeway it's just brown and the water is now open.
I reach the island and head south towards the Ranch; here's hoping the bison are away from the Sentry Trail (but something tells me I should save the 1/2 hour and go directly to the White Rock Trail).
I spot a single bison at the start of the rocky area along the curves but less then 100 yards farther, there's another 5-6 bison not far from the road.
There's more bison on the hills near the Gravel Pit Trail, a Porcupine across from Frary Peak, and a large herd of bison stretched out south of Frary Peak. I look closely for "little reds" (baby bison) but find none. (I have seen them before around the 1st week of March.)
It's quiet all the way to the Ranch and yep, there's a large herd of bison scattered around the trail heading to Mushroom Springs - shoot!I turn around and head north. I really don't want to hike the Gravel Pit; I need something different. White Rock, I don't have the time as I need to be home by 1pm. I guess I'll try the Lakeside Trail. I've never been on it before.
The trail is 2.8 miles to the other side at the Bridger Campground. The Park also made a loop of it a few years ago but again no time for that. It's an in-n-back day!
Spring Parsley is blooming along the trail.
This trail runs along the Salt Lake shoreline and long the west side of Bison Point. Pretty side once the shoreline comes into view. But about a mile in, I see a lone, rogue bison about 20-30 feet from the trail - shoot!
I continue to a point I deem too close. He's happily eating but he's in my way.I turn around and head back.
I'm a little surprise when one trail runner passes me and then 2 more; am I just being to cautious with the bison or are these folks just taking chances. And then the couple turn and head back the same way. Not worth the risk to me.
I also get to hear a Meadowlark singing his song!
Good day.
